Valor's Trial

Tanya Huff

4.05 AVERAGE

This one was a little darker and more brutal than the earlier books. A little heartbreaking, but still wonderful.

My summary: As far as military SF goes, [a:Tanya Huff|1967|Tanya Huff|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1207242126p2/1967.jpg]>>>>>>>>[a:John Scalzi|4763|John Scalzi|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1562613145p2/4763.jpg].

I know. I'm as surprised as you are.

I thought I had outgrown my military SF phase, but Huff's characters, especially her heroine, are so complex, so well-drawn, and just flat-out captivating that it sucks you in. There is humor and heart, adventure, great character beats, fantastic plots, and pacing that will leave you breathless.

The first three books were excellent. This fourth one is phenomenal.

Fun series

What can I say, I like space opera and this is an above average example. Tight writing and well developed characters. Quite entertaining.

This is another Torin book that I could have sworn that I'd read before (i.e., I'm positive that I've read the entire series) but I have NO memory of it at all.

I can't even picture Torin not [verbing] a [spoiler]. Good thing I have the next book, too...

I so enjoyed this. It had been too long since I was in Gunnery Sargent Torin Kerr's world. There's well done action scenes and so many questions answered. Also it doesn't shy away from the dark parts of survival in a prisoner of war camp. The thoughts and actions of the characters are realistic and the desire to stay alive at whatever the cost is as well.
Instead of fighting an enemy, in this one Gunny is fighting her own marines as well as the environment in order to escape. We get details about different races and get to learn so much about the war.
This series is just fun to read military sci-fi. Recommend to those that enjoy the genre

I have liked this series a lot, and this is no exception. The relationship is managed without the gushiness that I find irritating (and seems completely in character). Torin manages to negotiate her people (such as they are) through more difficult and unlikely circumstances with her customary panache and aplomb.

The only sad part is that this seems to be the end of this series. Which makes sense, it's a good spot to end it...but I will miss the universe created here.

Oops. I actually finished this awhile ago. The ending stunned me that much. From start to finish I was wrapped up in Torin's attempts at escaping an earthly prison (and now I just realized the metaphor....) and Craig's tireless search either for her person or her body. Both of them have earned so many hugs.
