'A Christmas Carol' is familiar to most people because of its various film adaptions but way back when, Dickens plugged himself into the public consciousness and wrote this little gem of a book to reflect on life in the 1840s. I've never had much interest in reading it but since it's cropped up on the scheme of work I'll be teaching, I was left with little choice. Suffice to say, the writing was long-winded but masterful, there was a lot of superfluous detail and I definitely enjoyed this more than 'Oliver Twist'. By now I'm aware that Dickens tells the reader about the whole supermarket instead of the aisle he's aiming for so I was prepared for the deluge of detail but it's still off-putting, especially in such a short story. Nonetheless the tension suitably mounted, the scenes of terror, i.e. Marley's appearance, filled me with an adequate spine-chilling fear that had me peering over my shoulder in my room and the ending proved satisfying and realistic with the ever-popular Tiny Tim comment rounding things off.

9/10. A Christmas classic. Both comedic and creepy.
The only thing I don't like is it doesn't mention the Christmas story or the true meaning of Christmas.

I have a personal tradition of reading this each year if possible, but I’ve missed the last couple of years. I’m so glad I read it again this year - the story never gets old no matter how many times I read it (or hear it). This time I listened to the audiobook by Jim Dale and it was narrated beautifully. I read the book while listening for the last staves, also. I love experiencing the story in a new way.

this book brought back some memories of childhood. I remember having to read this story as a kid back in school. I had loved it then and i love it now.

This short novel teaches to be selfless and to be always kind to our fellow humans. Also Scrooge shows us that its never late to change.

Now i want to reread this for the christmas season

A Christmas classic for a reason. Although, I've heard and seen the story many times I'm glad to finally have read it. There were a lot of interesting tidbits that were missed in the versions I've seen.

Simply one of the greatest stories ever. P.J. Lynch's illustrations in this edition are absolutely gorgeous.
