Rereading this as an adult hits different. A young and impressionable girl thinks she’s falling in love with a stranger but instead falls into an addiction to crank, completely destroys the trajectory of her life. It’s intriguing to see how Kristina develops a second personality “Bree” who is her opposite but drives her to delve more into the dark side. It’s an unfortunate story about struggling with addictions. I like how the style of writing mimics her scattered thought process. It’s a shame that it’s a banned book when it can help young readers to know the consequences but also to empathize with those who struggle.

A blast from the past. This was a good read. Not the best but it is an older book. It took turns I don’t remember the first time around. Still very nostalgic for me and still a good quick read.

Fast Read

I do like a good novel in verse. This was a fast read because it was interesting to watch how one innocent girl could sink to such a low so fast. Even as I read it, I thought that “Bree” was smart enough to make some wise decisions but it wasn’t the case. Kristina was the smart one, Bree was the tough one that every person has hiding inside them-and at some point she either breaks free or dies.

What I didn’t know was that this was based on real life (although I should have figured it was). We aren’t reading Kristina/Bree’s story, we are reading Mom’s interpretation of Kristina/Bree’s story. This was her daughter and she lived the other side of it...the side we see quite often on television or in the movies...the parents. I really had no clue, although I wondered why Bree didn’t really face any repercussions for her actions and stealing. Why didn’t she test for HIV? Lots of questions. Some answers, not much.

I’ll never forget finding this book on my teens and spending a good amount of time convincing my pop it wasn’t a book about drugs, it was a book about a “monster” who destroys a girls life…

… only to read it and realize what “crank” meant

really enjoyed this growing up for how "juicy" i thought it was, but now re-reading as an adult, i cannot imagine why this was ever a YA novel. still holds up in a lot of ways. love the poetry style of writing, and makes for a quick, but complex read. i just wish the ending wasn't so rushed.

I really didn't like this book, ONLY because I wasn't into reading in the poetry form. Some readers probably don't mind it, but that was the only reason I was turned off this book. Probably won't be reading the other books from this author due to that.
