Audiobook, part of my banned book series.

This book was fine, somewhere in tone to Tricks, also by this author. I give it three stars because I'm kind of ambivalent about the book in general. It was fine, and probably good for parents to read. I doubt it encourages any child to start doing drugs, or have unprotected sex, or get raped.

This is an older book, but definitely banned often. Since I assume it's the "hard right" who were always doing the banning, I'm actually a little surprised they banned this. They must have been torn. Reasons to ban: Well the book has rape and a lot of drug use and the slippery slope of falling into that life, drugs not rape. You don't fall into rape, although I guess drugs were making the protagonist more susceptible and available for such actions.

Anyway, I'm sure the hard right was confused because the girl ends up having her rape baby which seems to be the hard right wet dream right there. Nothing they enjoy more than a girl who's not ready to have a baby, having that baby, with drug problems, and unable to care for it.

I wanted to like it. It's the Abe Lincoln Award winner. Not sure if i never connected because of the prose, or because I just never got into the character Kristina/Bree. I can see the appeal to the YA audience.

LOVEEEE THIS book i enjoyed it a lot :))

3.5 stars. Quick easy read in poetic verse. Paints an impactful picture of meth addiction but a weirdly abrupt ending.

4.5 stars... Usually I don't believe in half-stars, but this one is just so close to a five it pains me. READ IT.

Ellen Hopkins writes in such a way that makes the reader read her books with the same excitement, desperation and ferocity as a cliff diver needs air after plummeting into the depths of the sea and frantically kicking their way out of the ethereal underworld and back up to the land of oxygen and sunshine... Take a deep breath, because you're going in!

Crank is the story of Kristina- a seemingly normal girl who via experimentation gets sucked into the depths of meth usage. Imagine a story about how your best friend went from a pretty, social, yet unremarkable girl to a tweaker bitch named Bree with eyes only for the monster (meth). This is that story and it will make you despise yet understand drug abuse and will start to make you understand the toll it takes on the individual and the family.

A dive into the mind of a teenager on an addictive ride with crank.

Crank is...Powerful. Interesting. Original. And a quick read. It shows how easy the downward spiral into drug addiction, sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, and other similar issues can happen to 'normal' people.

Parents, consider having your early high school students read this book. This is a better warning against drugs than D.A.R.E classes ever were!

I also really loved Ellen Hopkin's poetic style of writing. She used rhyme, rhythm, and spacing to help convey the disjointed feelings and thoughts of a drug addict. I don't know much about this style, but am very interested in reading more of it.
