Too existential sci-fi for me and not enough (i.e. nearly zero) horror/thriller/suspense. The
escape from the craft was touched on in the last chapter,
whereas I would've preferred an entire book about that, and less space devoted to
SILAS trying to come to terms with its own identity/disassembling the illusions.
Felt like a quarter of the book was wasted on that. It would've been better as a novella.

I struggled getting into this book.  The first third of the book seems to be telling the same basic story over and over again in different time periods.  Starts with a sailing vessel, then a steam vessel and then a dirigible.  The meat of the story finally becomes clear but it was just ok for me.  It was a fast read but not a recommendation for me.

Ugh. I am thoroughly disappointed. I found the mystery uninteresting, the characters boring, the plot contrived, and the whole thing seemed like a bad PKD novel. Additionally, some key plot points are left unresolved... Oh, and the blurb contains huge spoilers, which I despise. I am only giving it two stars because I found the AI treatment pretty thought-provoking. I'm still hoping that, one day, I will fall in love with one of Alastair Reynolds' books.

This novel combines my love of Sci-Fi with diving into what it means to be human and I couldn’t have loved it more. This is a story where once you get to the end and understand what is going on it makes you go back and reflect on the entire book differently. I love stories that make me think and analyze everything, so I am very excited to reread this in the future with what I now know. I do not think this would be a story for everyone because it does take a while for things to make sense, so I completely understand why people keep saying they DNF’d this at 50%, but I absolutely loved the journey and the way the ending made me take a closer look at everything else. This was such a clever novel about friendships, humanity, the choices we make and what it truly means to be alive. There’s also the mystery aspect of it that just makes you want to keep reading to unravel it. This is a true masterpiece in my opinion!

Too long, repetitive and at times silly with handwaved plotholes.  I agree with other reviewers that it would be better as a novella (or a short film).  Entertaining and kept my attention for me to speed read it in a few days so 3.25 it is!
