This was a very tense book riddled with mystery and a page turner from the beginning. I honestly never wanted to put it down as the momentum of the events never seemed to slow down and I was always anxious to read what was next. Highly recommend for horror and Stephen King fans.

Lots of details in this book which made me super invested in the characters and the story.  The characters in the book really came to live. Also the way the horrors where described really made me freak out.
especially the scene with the lady in the bathtub in room 217 gave me shivers.

Well written and scary

Ummmm so who knew I'd be a HUGE Stephen King girlie? Not usually my kinda genre but boy, did this book take me by surprise. I was absolutely blown away. Time to finally brave the film?

I so wanted to love this, and I did find it reasonably enjoyable but I do feel it could have been 200 pages shorter and been just... better. I saw the film first and I definitely prefer the more in depth character study the book gives us, and I also enjoyed that the nature of the haunting of the Overlook was less abstract and more coherent, and the symbolism is much tighter, but during the last 100 pages I found myself skimming through the padding (which I think is King trying to build tension with limited success) to get to the real meat. Not enough dense emotion for my taste in horror, verbose with too much mundane filler between the scares. It was fine but if this is among King's best regarded works then I'll be sticking to other writers. Also super male gazey (Wendy is a well rounded character but her breasts are not relevant to the story, Stephen) and racist as hell.

A ton of interesting metaphors and symbolism about the chain of abuse that wrap very satisfyingly into a cataclysmic finish! Unreliable narrators are my weak spot and The Shining delivered! This was an excellent read if you have a long while to sit down and consider all at once, but with all SK is quite a hassle to get through until the last quarter or so. Definitely worth the wait. My largest criticism and what made it hardest to get through smoothly is his lack of ability to write any character other than a white man- the rest of the cast was very lacking. All in all, a very satisfying read when put all together, with genius symbolism placed throughout
