This is a constant issue the author has along the series, giving their female lead to much of a dark background, which makes the book seem superficial about the issues they portray. I don't think what the author wrote was disrespectful, but a romance novel isn't the place to develop a plot about taking a sexual abuser down. It may seem out-of-touch and very awkward to read.

I loved the first Bromance Book Club book, and I decided to read the rest of the series while memories of the characters are still fresh. Add the fact that I really liked Braden Mack's character in the first book, and I've been looking forward to read Undercover Bromance. It's true that Liv wasn't my favorite character in the first book, and I'm still not that big of a fan of her in this sequel, but thanks to Mack and the rest of the characters I still had a brilliant time reading it. I didn't expect this story to be quite so serious, as it has a heavy focus on sexual assault and power imbalance at the workplace. I liked how the topic was incorporated into the plot though, and I was rooting for them as they try to bring the bastard down. The only reason I didn't rate it higher is probably because of Liv; her stubbornness and attitude made it very hard to like her character, and it took way too long for her character to fully redeem herself. I absolutely loved Mack's character though, as well as the rest of the book club members and the new characters incorporated. I literally flew through this story, and I already can't wait to read the next book and learn more about Alexis.

I had such high hopes and in the beginning they were met, exceeded even. Then all hell broke loose.

Why the actual fuck was Mack’s “lie” about his past used as the main point of the conflict. Liv felt so absurdly childish there I almost dnfed at over 70% completion (something I never do). Mack clearly hid his past and ties to a fucking murderer and abuser to move away from that part of his life. He has a public image and owes nothing to his father so why the hell would he keep his name?? And Liv had no right to be angry at this because they honestly barely knew each other there was no time for that to come out. And she didn’t tell him every gorey detail of her past so why did she except that in return? And why did Vlad seem to gain his name at the end? It seemed like because he *finally* did something helpful (heavy of the sarcasm) that he was upgraded from “the Russian” to an actual name. Is it just me or should calling people by their name or preferred name be common practice and not something that has to be earned? Okay phew anyways.

I really really really did enjoy the first two thirds of this book. I was in love with it honestly. That’s the only reason for the semi high rating but I feel like the last third was such a disappointment. Super sad about that and really hope the next book is better especially because I loved Noah’s character is this one (though I thought the same about Mack and still do).
