This book was a huge disappointment. Feed was enjoyable despite the writing flaws, but this book was tedious with all the same flaws as the first book, and a lot of new flaws as well. Also pretty uncomfortable with the direction taken with the siblings’ relationship. I’d been planning on reading the rest of the series but I don’t think I will after this one.

where to begin....i stopped listening to this like half way through because it was just not interesting to me. which is saying something given that the plot moves pretty quickly and there are dramatic events. the way the author writes is just grating to me, peak 2010s Joss whedon inspired dialogue and character personalities. the voice the guy reading the audiobook was doing was also obnoxious to me. i did start back up again though because i don't like leaving things unfinished, and the world building and overall plot was interesting. i still like those parts, there is definitely a lot of thought put into the practicalities of living with the virus. but it feels like sometimes they're overexplained or details are repeated a lot, another issue i have with the writing style. but my biggest issue of all is the main character. Sean, Sean, Sean.....what an obnoxious and abusive asshole. and here i was wondering why he's so over the top obsessed with his dead sister when...
we find out that they were fucking???? because he says her name after having sex with one of his reporters???? ~oh they're adopted it's fine~ shut up they were raised as siblings it's incest. i was in shock. this is minor in comparison to that but it also annoyed me so much that he was always talking to the ghost of Georgia or whatever out loud because why could you just not think things to her?? why did it have to be said out loud, that was entirely unnecessary.
so yeah i did not like Sean. and i don't think I'll be listening to or reading the final book of the trilogy, the wiki summary will more than satisfy my curiosity. great idea, bad execution.

Never had a sequel fallen so far so fast as Deadline to Feed. Feed is an intricate, compelling, fresh exploration of a post-outbreak society trying to live with the undead. It explores deeply and thoughtfully with a clever and tense plot that keeps the reader on edge.

Deadline however, strips away all that made Feed a compelling story and turns it into hundreds of pages of melodrama. The main characters are very unlikeable and self righteous.

Spoilers ahead:

I do not review books I DNF but the final installment to the trilogy is the nail in the coffin. What starts out as a compelling zombie trilogy drifts into highly ridiculous, over the top sci fi conspiracies and fetishizes taboo relationships in a VERY unsavory way. I have a hard time believing that the sequels to Feed came from the same writer as the original. They read like fan fiction in a bad way.

Lastly, in two books, you kill both major characters and they BOTH come back from the dead. Nothing takes the stakes away from a book more - especially one about staying alive - than bringing one, NEVERMIND TWO, characters back to life. It makes the books ridiculous and dull. If you don’t want to kill off your main characters fine, but don’t “kill them off” to bring them back just for cheap, feigned moments of sadness and equally as cheap “shocks.” In my opinion, it’s very amateurish because it relies on low hanging fruit for shallow responses instead of taking the time to develop real moments with real stakes and real consequences. It’s all just very lazy.

To end, asking readers to think invest is sweet is disturbing. Clones are almost ALWAYS stupid and indicative that the author just didn’t know how to wrap things up. Deadline and Blackout tarnish legacy Feed could have left behind. Really, REALLY disappointing.
