Surprisingly enough, I really loved Sohn Won-Pyung's "Almond", a book about a boy with a brain condition called Alexithymia, which makes it difficult for him to feel anger or fear. I flew through the book super quickly, it is pretty short and is easy to get into. It gave me "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" vibes, but it did hold pretty well on its own- an intrinsic look at the human mind and the relationships we forge in our lifetimes. Also, "Almond" probably has one of my favorite covers of all time, and was definitely one of my favorite books of the year.

I’d like to come back with a more intelligible review later, but my main thought upon finishing is “that may be one of the best books I’ve ever read”.

A unique little story.

I really enjoyed the plot, I thought it was quite a unique concept and I enjoyed the way it unfolded. I also liked the double explanation for the ending, the ambiguity. The characters were three dimensional and I liked them a lot, but I wish we'd had more opportunity to develop a bond with the characters. It was a very short book, which left me wanting more from the character interactions. For example, we're told one of the characters visits the other often, but we only get one or two of those visits described in bits and pieces. Besides, the writing wasn't that great, and especially the scenery descriptions didn't always flow nicely.

Overall, the plot was great but the execution was a bit lacking at times. 3.5/5

Couldn’t tell were this was going since I knew nothing about this but wow. So well done. Definitely going to try to read more translated fiction from now on.

I finished this in one sitting. Really love the character development. It was so emotional towards the end, I totally didn't bawl my eyes out.
