This short story is the prequel to Ground of Blood and tells the back story of Damien. He lived in the orphanage for 15 years, until he was turned out to make his own way. He had a difficult live at the orphanage, but his luck turns when he finds employment at the local hotel. Mr Preston, who had lived in the orphanage himself for a few years, takes Damien under his wing. Damien then meets the beautiful telekinetic, Alyssa. Will he finally have a happy life?
This was a short, but very emotional read. I enjoyed the character building of Damien, and Preston gave me hope. The writing style is fantastic and this prequel definitely has me excited for what comes next.
Tears of an Orphan by Mikel Wilson is a short bonus story that was released in advance of the highly anticipated Ground of Blood, book 3 of the Rise of the Dreads (ROTD) multi-author series, which I also strongly recommend to those who love dark, romance, twisty, and spice!
This book is at once a hauntingly sad but hopeful at times narrative of a young man having lived in an abusive orphanage for 15 years until the day he is suddenly thrown out on the streets. His innocence of the outside world is charming and at times comical, but above all Damien's journey really shows the good and ugly of humanity.
This is the first book I have read by Mikel Wilson, and having started the ROTD series, this was a fun surprise and I am now ordering his backlist, love his writing. A quick punch, Tears of an Orphan has resonated with me and will linger long past the final page read.

Ummm... What the hell? I don't even know where to start. The orphanage was super cringe but I was ready to accept that. Then he's out like the orphanage wasn't supposed to be the biggest part of his personality.
Then he immediately gets a perfect job from the most kind man on the planet. Then he meets a girl, meets her father the next day and marries her 4 days after they met. The kindest man on the planet dies of course, to leave him his whole business. His wife finds out she's pregnant and the same day they see the baby on the ultrasound and listen to its heartbeat. I hope the author knows that's not how it works. Oh, and, they have powers for some reason? That don't get mentioned till half of the book and seem to have no real purpose other than that someone thought it'd be cool if they had powers. By the way, the kid is 18...
This book had me emotional. I felt so bad for all those kids in the orphanage but mostly Damien. I love how he grew into a fine young man and made a life for himself. I felt for him when he finally found Stephanie but she acted like she didn’t know him. That cliffhanger though. Can’t wait to continue Damien’s story!

A short prequel that packs a sad punch.
Mikel Wilson captures the early years of a young boy who deals with endless amounts of abuse, loss of friendship and mental anguish. Damien's story will have your heart aching to give this boy the warmest hug.
