Machado does such a good job of presenting the mind and the world of an abusive relationship. You both are horrified by what the woman in the dream house did and also understand and empathise with why Machado felt she had to stay. The pacing in short essays is also brilliant, describing different aspects of the relationship rather than presenting a strictly linear storyline. I also appreciated Machado adding in parts of wlw history, because, as she articulates, this history has gotten largely erased.

Heartbreaking, informative, and brilliant, with circular narrative that will just keep punching you in the gut. Thank God Carmen Maria Machado is also hilarious, or every reader would be breathless with horror. Not a love story, except maybe with herself.
