Definitely an interesting collection, to say the least. Much of it didn’t make sense to me directly, so this review is full of only my (probably wrong) interpretations. I didn’t enjoy the first story at all, but “The Pull of the Wing” was a very interesting follow up, being a story about fairy adjacent people who speak with some sort of sign language and are effectively controlled by something? I don’t know, but it was pretty good. The next story, “The Taming”, also didn’t make a whole lot of sense on paper but it was sort of giving puppy mill energy with the cold food being just canned wet food that they were using. I did quite enjoy “Hemmie’s Calenture” and her journey of acceptance and growth, but the scene where I’m pretty sure she has sex with a deer was a little off-putting for me. Finally, “Because of the Bone Man” was easily the star of the show. It was an powerful story of community in the face of disaster. The story was full of impactful commentary, and it ended in such a hopeful way that I couldn’t help but to love it. This whole collection I didn’t quite get, but I liked it and would definitely read more by the author, especially since “The Pull of the Wing” was a prequel story.
