This was entertaining, but dark. When I started this book I was low key confused because I had no idea what time period we were in and I still don’t know, but then I got invested. I did like the main character and appreciated what she went through and her growth. I liked the makes, but I feel like we only got to know like two of them.

I went into this for the circus smut but ended up getting a very emotional story in the beginning. But the feminine rage that came after it was delicious. And, of course, the circuit smut was perfection. I definitely would love more of these characters or a spin-off of sorts with some of the kids that they rescued once they grow into adulthood.

I absolutely loved the premise of this book. I love dark romance, love a why choose trope and morally grey MMC so this book ticked a load of boxes. And then add in the circus where the performers are alerted to victims who need their help and rescue them and I really am smitten. I loved the magic of the premise and the way it’s embedded throughout out. I would have loved to read more about the circus and the card reading as I loved it.
The characters in the story are great. My favourite was the FMC Ember aka the Queen. We meet her first as a child interested in the circus and enjoying her trip there, we then meet her as a victim of domestic violence who calls the circus and then as the Queen of the circus. She is strong, she is resilient and she is powerful. She is the absolute star of the show.
The MMCs - Diamond, Spade, Club and Heart are great supporting characters (adding a healthy dose of 🌶️). I would have liked to have a little more detail about them, we learn their backstory but I just wanted a little more detail about them and where this all started.
Although there were bits I wanted more of, I really enjoyed this book and would love it if there was a follow on. It’s totally different and it’s interesting. It’s dark but not too dark, plenty of trigger warnings but if that’s your vibe (and it is mine) then I recommend.
