I am not quite sure what to think of this yet.
It was recommended to me as both a prequel to the only book that currently exists in the Birdverse, The Four Profound Weaves, and as an insight into what kind of writing style to expect.
You are dropped into this world with very explanations and you really can't make basic assumptions on the world, the characters or the magic which makes it even harder. I might reread this afterwards to get a clearer picture.
The writing is beautiful but not very accessible to me.
It's also casually diverse which I really enjoyed: Aviya is in love with another woman who is exploring her gender identity, her grandmother starts presenting as a man, her developmentally disabled brother is refused by the men and is now socialized as a girl

A lovely story of queer representation and acceptance, and also of learning to recognize and overcome one's internalized transphobia, set within a fantasy desert setting. Read this in preparation for The Four Profound Weaves, which I received an ARC for; I shall be moving onto it post-haste.
