"Here is where you are.
There is where you want to be.
But you can't get there from here."
--Harrison Blanchard aka OG

Honestly, I don't like this book at all. It's a waste of my time. Really!

All about homeless kids' own language and lifestyle which I'm not interested in.

Too bad. 1 out of 5 stars.

Maybe is a teen who is homeless and living in New York with a small clan of other homeless teens. Strasser clearly describes the day to day struggles she faces. She does not trust adults, it’s no wonder, since her mother abused her and did not want her around. She has a scar on her back, the imprint of a hot iron from her mom. The statistics about homeless teens actually bear out Strasser’s harsh plot points. Many of her friends die on the streets.

This is a good book for teens to read to begin to have empathy for homeless people. I cringed at memories I have of homeless teens I saw on the streets and did not help.

"You couldn't live in the streets.
You could only die there."

A group of homeless teens band together to help each other survive on the streets of New York. The narrator, Maybe, left her abusive mother and feels that the street--dirty , cold, and brutal as it is--is the only place for a girl like her, a girl no one loves.

Maggot says that living on the streets is the only way to maintain your freedom. Country Club is the first of the group to leave. He dies of liver failure at 22. OG has a constant, hacking cough, but refuses to seek medical attention. He adopts an abandoned dog (Pest)after Country Club's death. 2Moro is beautiful and HIV-positive. Prostitution helps her survive, but for how long? Jewel is a male prostitute who dresses up as a woman and goes clubbing with 2Moro. Rainbow, Maybe's closest friend, does drugs to keep herself numb. Tears is only 12 and is the newest member of the group.

As bad as life on the streets can be, they all agree that it is better than the lives they left behind. As Maybe watches her friends disappear one by one, she wonders if there might be another life for her.

A powerful and realistic glimpse into street life.

This is the first book I've read by Todd Strasser and I loved it. It was beautifully written. I loved Maybe, she was a really amazing main character. She and her friends went through many trials. I, personally, cannot imagine going through what Maybe and her "tribe" did. I think this is an awe-inspiring story.. proving that street kids can turn their lives around.. even if it's not a true story..I still enjoyed it!

This was a heartbreaking look at how homeless teenagers live when they think they have no other choice than living on the streets. Maybe lives on the streets of New York City with a "family" of other teens. Some as young as 12 who sell themselves to eat, buy drugs, and have something that resembles a bit of normalcy. Even the street kids want to hang out in clubs and party and they find ways to do that. Maybe loses all of her "family" mostly to death but there is one of her friends who finds her way back to someone to who loves her. Maybe through the loses and hope of a happy future for her friend thinks that there is a chance for her.
