Boundary Magic book 3

Wonderful wrap up to this trilogy! I enjoyed the interaction of the various characters. The mysteries were perplexing. And I had fun with all the magical information.

This is the third installment of the Boundary Magic series. The protagonist, boundary witch Lex Luther, is back for another adventure. She narrowly managed to save the day in the previous book. After weeks of dealing with the aftermath, Lex gets to settle down for a bit. Also, as thanks for her service, Lex's boss Maven grants her permission to let her brother-in-law John Wheaton know she’s a witch. This happens before the book starts, so the reader doesn’t get to see it happen. It appears that John didn’t take the news well. He takes Charlie and some of their family on a trip away from Colorado. Lex isn’t happy, but she at least knows Charlie will be safe away from Boulder.

It doesn’t take long before new trouble arises. Maven discovers that some of her vampires have been poisoned with a rare strain of belladonna. If there’s anything Maven hates, it’s that plant. And it so happens that belladonna is most commonly used by witches. The only clan in Boulder is the Pellars, who are Maven's allies. If the attacks continue, it could start a war. Maven sends her right hand, Quinn, along with Lex to stop the attacks.

A new character is introduced in Boundary Born. He’s Emil, a man who has answers to many of Lex's questions. He's not only aware of the Old World; he shares a special bond with Lex. Emil has been looking for her for decades. It wasn’t until he heard of a boundary witch in Boulder that he managed to find Lex. She feels stunned at first but doesn’t seem reluctant to connect with Emil once she learns who he is. The encounter also reveals more about Lex's origins. If you've read the previous books, you'll know she's not a Luther by blood.

Two characters who've become more prominent are Simon and Lily Pellar. They're both siblings, and trades witches. Simon is the first witch Lex met. They've become good friends since then. Their relationship changed a little after Lex saved Simon's life...with her boundary power. It appeared like there might be a love triangle, but Lex never wavered from Quinn. In this book, Simon also gets a new science lab from Maven. He's a science professor who likes researching Old World evolution in his spare time. The lab will be a great help for that.

Not long after Lex meets Emil, a dangerous enemy emerges. He manages to do the unthinkable: take down Maven. Lex barely manages to keep her head on straight when she finds her boss almost dead. With her allies's help, Lex hides Maven until they can come up with a plan. Now that the most powerful character in the book is incapacitated, the stakes rise drastically. Seeing that his way is clear, the main antagonist reveals himself to Lex. She never imagined he would shed light on even more aspects about her origins. The new threat is also extremely powerful, as everyone feared. His goal is to kill Maven and take Lex with him. I wondered what the guy would want with a boundary witch, when he’s even more powerful than Lex.

This was the most suspenseful book yet in the Boundary Magic series. Lex hasn’t faced such a powerful threat before, especially not without Maven. Luckily, she’s more than just a witch. Lex has additional skills that could just make the difference. It’s explained from the beginning that magic doesn’t work against magic. That means it’s lucky that Lex isn’t defenseless without combat magic. She’s proving to be a woman not to be trifled with. I strongly recommend this book. It’s the best one in the series so far.

My rating: ★★★★★
5 stars - Absolutely must-read. It's outstanding!!!

Hands down this is my very favorite Boundary book. I hope to see more added to this series. I love Lex. She is loyal and brave. She honors her word and fights for what is right as she learns her place in the world as a witch that she is only just now learning she is. I devoured this book and can't wait for another by this author.

I really like this series. I own all of them, and relisten. But you can always count on the main character to miss obvious problems, and to make terrible decisions. The "oh a bad person did a bad thing, it's clearly my fault and I'll lie to everyone who could help me, in a foolish attempt to protect them that will backfire completely" plotline can just stop - thanks.

It was a bit slow starting but it picked up well in the middle and turned into a fast paced race to deal with her newly found background and the big - boss fight. I liked that it could end cleanly here or open an entirely new long arc. I hope it's a new long arc and the series continues.

Lex comes into her own

But her own is pretty scary. I really love this character and I hope she turns up again. More Lex!

Best story in this universe yet. I really do love Lex. This was a gritty and gripping episode in the series for the main arc, and lots of smallers arcs and subplots were advanced in a really satisfying way here too. I almost never like the love interest but Quinn is great. And the monster du jour this time is genuinely disturbing. Great urban fantasy.

Still love this series. Flirts with Mary Sue-ness but stays on the right side of that line for me. I'm sad there aren't any more but hope I'll like the author's other series as well.

The 3rd and final book in the first Lex story arc - and the 6th novel in the series. Boundary Born is pretty damned good!

This book sees Lex come face to face with her biological father - but family isn't just about blood!

You definitely need to read these books in order for the best experience, but you won't be disappointed in any way.

A brilliant Urban Fantasy book in a brilliant series.
