It was smart (you can tell that the author actually knows his stuff re: physics), but trying to distill that knowledge to a layperson through the perspective of someone who isn’t an expert just ended up being really boring and leaving us with long swaths of explanations we didn’t need. It also made the main character seem even more like an asshole.
It tried to be funny. This book gets comp’d to The Martian often enough that I figured it would at least try. And it did try. But really it just made the main character out to be - you guessed it - even more of an asshole.
None of the side characters are interesting. The main character isn’t even interesting, but he at least gets into interesting situations. The only thing that actually felt fleshed out about the whole book was the science. Everything else was bare bones, just enough to say that it was a plot point. You’ve got a religious cult, an alien species, mounting tension between the crew, mysterious deaths, and… THAT was all we got for the ending? Boring.

Meh. Could’ve been better. Not good, not bad.
