What a nothing burger of a novel.

Concept was interesting, but execution was mid. Not to mention this is clearly written by a man. One of my biggest pet peeves as a reader is when a man writes unrealistic women. (You can substitute this for any opressor/oppressed demographic, but man/woman is the one that applies here.) It’s just so annoying. This is one of those man-writes-scifi-to-fulfill-his-fantasies kind of novels. At some point the MC makes a comment to his girlfriend that is so incredibly condescending, rude, and out-of-place, but she doesn’t challenge him on it or anything. Like… what??? Why was this comment even said? It doesn't even make sense to the plot!

ugh, just annoying and disappointing.

The first 75% of the book was really interesting but I found the conclusion to be a bit of a let down.

The premise of this book is explained on the back and is clear in the first 20-30 pages, and we go from there. Ashton has crafted a believable scientific world where the potential need for a human "Expendable" fits, though why they don't have backups for all the original colonists is not as convincing.

I hoped this would be a fun, adventure-filled read and it sure was. Not quite as good as John Scalzi's Old Man's War series, it has the same vibe, and if you liked that you'll probably like this. Check it out.
