Interesting book, but this is a rare case of the movie being better than the book. If I hadn’t seen the movie yet, it would be 4 stars, but the movie set the bar really high.

Fun sci Fi romp into a future where humans are colonizing other planets (with varying degrees of success) often with the help of human Expendables because they're cheaper to regenerate than drones or other machinery. Some interesting science and philosophy thrown in with the characters and plot but it doesn't all totally mesh for me, maybe because the timeline jumps around quite a bit.

Mickey7 by Edward Ashton is a story about a human clone sent on a dangerous colonization mission, where dying over and over again is just part of the job.

I really liked this book. It’s very funny, and Ashton is great at writing sarcastic characters. His sense of humor is sharper and more biting than that of other authors known for their irony (like Scalzi, for example) whose style I find a bit too mild in comparison.

While the story stays light overall, it does bring some philosophical themes to the surface, especially around identity and ethical choices. They’re not explored in great depth, but they’re clearly present and play a meaningful role in the story.

Some parts of the book, especially the more ironic passages, reminded me a little of Vonnegut’s style. That doesn’t mean the book is trying to be like a Vonnegut novel, just that certain moments had a similar tone, and I appreciated that.

Overall, it’s a light and enjoyable read. I picked it up after finishing a much darker book, and it worked well as a kind of "palate cleanser".

Look, every other review already says it, but I'll say it too. The movie is better. This book's got a lot of fun concepts, but the author doesn't seem to know what to do with them. Rather than pushing them to their full extent, he sort of wanders and wavers and doesn't quite get anywhere specific. It's still a nice, light, sci-fi read, but it lacks any of the real punchiness or grappling with difficult ideas that I was  hoping to get.

The book and the movie are totally different, but both are amazing in their own way. The book is just better, I guess. It’s super fun and funny, and the characters are all great. The only downside is that it stops to explain history all the time. It was interesting, but it slowed down the story. Overall, I loved it!
