The author's never afraid to let nuance get in the way of a good narrative. A good example of the bad old history of science in which everything falls into a neat (and to be fair, well written) narrative tracing its way from the ancient Greeks through to the present day. No stops along the way, and certainly no significant tangents. Just a series of discoveries made by individual cleverclogs leading to more of the same. Published in 2005(?) I'd have thought we'd be past this by now.
