Outrageously and almost painfully British. I encountered an unfamiliar word or phrase about every five pages, but had very little impulse to look them up. The characters were all awful people, except the Inspector. I rather liked him, and so I may someday give another in the series a try.

Sometimes you just need to read a good old fashioned whodunnit in the spirit of the butler did it in the study with the candlestick.

Alleyn seems pretty much fully formed in this first book, the Russian sub plot was all kinds of silliness.
