The promise of Harry Potter-meets-Avatar: The Last Airbender made me pick up this book. I immediately put it back down. The writing style was choppy and far too juvenile and immature for YA, and I just couldn't get into it. The writing style and voice made it feel more like the sixteen-year-old character was twelve.

I have complicated feeling a for this book…. I did enjoy but it does have me feeling some type of way. For starters it felt way more YA than I was expecting it to be which isn’t a bad thing expect there were several times when it felt like the story itself didn’t want to be YA if that makes any sense?

Also I think in general there was just way too much going on in this book. At times it felt like I was reading 2 different books at the same time. All of the concepts just didn’t completely melt together for me. I LOVED all the concepts they just needed more work on merging together.

It just felt too rushed with. Finding out she is a sorcerer, getting involved with the spy agency, having to go to school to learn about her powers and the family mystery all happening at the same time and it was just overwhelming. I think each think needed to be more drawn out and focused on. There was enough stuff going on in here for two books or at the very least a longer book.

It just kind of felt like I was reading a first draft of a book that has a lot of potential. This is a debut novel to my knowledge so for that I give it grace and I am optimistic for the future of the series. I will be tuning in to see what’s next bc I am invested in all the storylines I just hope they find good cohesion moving forward

Orion finds out she has magic powers after being dropped off at her estranged, newly dead grandmothers house where a man she’s never met is her acting guardian while her mom is off doing work. She finds out about some family secrets she needs to solve, and can she trust who is around her?
