This was cute as hail (iykyk)! I loved Holly and John so much. This one is a tearjerker so be prepared, but also I laughed several times. Just a head’s up, there is some animal cruelty, but it is not graphic and he gets rescued and lives his best life.

Notes: The 2nd in the "The Improbable Meet-Cute" novella series (6 stand-alone novellas released around Valentine's Day 2024), and I just adored it. Both MCs were so cute and felt so real, and I just loved this story. I wanted so much more of it!!

Holly is a hospice nurse, who is working with her grandmother who is in hospice care at the end of her life (tried to put hospice as a trigger which was not an option) who starts a back and forth note passing with a mystery stranger. I wanted to connect more with the characters but I struggled with how short it was to do that. I love love love Abby’s writing but this one fell short for me.

Full disclosure: I realized when reading all The Improbable Meet-Cute short stories that I don’t like short stories, they leave me wanting more!!

“Take responsibility for your own unhappiness, Holly. If you don’t love your life, change it.”

I went in reading this short story thinking it would be the normal happy go lucky short stories it usually is - I was dead wrong. It literally reminded me of those few days before my own grandmother died and that made me miss her so much.

Abby Jimenez can make me feel so many emotions even thru short stories. I love how there’s that romance aspect in this book that made me forget I was sad as well. It was a roller coaster of emotion in such a short span of time.
