Started off strong and ended decent, kinda dragged in the middle.

Rated this 3 stars mostly due to my amusement over the mixture of fantasy and SF elements. The K'nyan are the alien ancestors of humanity, with "atomic flashlights" and "disintegration" rays. Meanwhile, they live under the earth in enormous, stable cavities, complete with their own sky and weather. Also, some of the story is a summary of another manuscript, written by a Catholic follower of Coronado, who was too devout to describe certain details. Since Lovecraft just usually says things are indescribable, or too horrible to be described, it was entertaining that there was an in-universe excuse for certain things not being described.

Otherwise, fairly routine Lovecraft. Mysterious location. Overt racism. Horrifying text. More horrifying exploration. Run away! Run away!

This was a decent satire of the steady decline of an "all-powerful" West tending toward decadence disguised as a story about a tribe of "psionic mole-people"; it would be a four or five-star story had it not pulled a quasi-"At the Mountains of Madness" in the middle, but I supposed long worldbuilding blocks of texts is the sort of poison I've picked at this point!

Beginning is quite slow, but man... the other parts of the book is really good. It does an awesome job escalating the narrative. It goes from simple town legend to classic Lovecraftian monstrosities. Besides, the ending is the best part of it.
