Mysterious doors leading to different places from different times, sounds coming from the wrong directions, and weird footprints are things that may strike someone as odd in a new house. When the Kings move to Pinedale, Xavier, David, and Toria are a little bit disappointed. The siblings soon after find out that their house is one of adventures - whether they're good or bad isn't determined. Until a strange man starts to show up at night in their house, things run smoothly. But when he does appear, everything gets a bit shaky. How could they have known that their house would become a battleground between the Kings and this mysterious man? I've read House of Dark Shadows, and I plan to read the rest of the series.

I read this quite a few years ago, long before I joined Goodreads, and I don't really remember a whole lot from it, but I've had the second book sitting on my bookshelf for a long time and I'm finally going to read it to see if it's a series I actually want to continue or not. I don't want to reread this first book though, so since I feel weird adding only the second book to my Goodreads shelves, I'm adding this one too and rating this one in the middle of the scale since that seems most fair to me.

So actual rating: 2.5 stars

A solid start to a young adult horror/adventure series. It definitely took a turn I wasn't expecting. It reminds me strongly of the Goosebumps series, but maybe for a slightly older age group.

This was a VERY VERY quick read. I liked the story although it did give me the creeps at times. I already bought #2. I am worried as this is a SIX book series, but they are such quick reads - mostly due to the formatting of the text. If paper were in short supply, they would never have allowed this to be 300 pages long :)
It was more scifi than murder mystery which I was expecting but am enjoying.

The first few pages hooked me - a woman vanishes in her house - years later the King family buys the house, they find out the house has a mysterious past (husband supposedly killed wife, family disappears) - the Kings soon discover that the house is  a portal to different times/places- then I got unhooked.   Not a bad story, very interesting concept, but after the first few pages I started to lose interest,  I did finish it (an easy YA/MG read) - but will not be continuing the series.

House of Dark Shadows by Robert Liparulo, I really enjoyed this first book in a series. I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I read the physical book instead of the audiobook. An interesting read that is reminiscent of Adventures In Odyssey and Ted Dekker books for a younger audience...

The Kings family move into an abandoned house and discover mysterious doors that lead to other worlds and times. Danger is lurking around every corner and they won't know what is hidden behind, until they go through the door....
