So close to feeling like memoir, the first story actually made me flip to the back cover to double check this was indeed fiction. McGuire manages to move through the various perspectives each story immerses the reader in with ease, but most effectively engages the reader (in my view anyway) when she writes about motherhood. She captures the muddy-brain-swirl of feelings alongside so effortlessly, and in the midst of my own postpartum this at times felt like someone was dripping my own thoughts across the page. These were clever and engaging stories, and I loved the thematic engagement with women on the precipice of change - I think you’d enjoy this collection if you also got on with Laura Elvery’s short fiction style.
