A fun read from start to finish. Had me hooked in no time! Might crank up the rating later, but for now it sits at like a 3.4 out of 5.

I'm not quite sure why the author of this book decided to make it a Young Adult book, as it would have served better as an adult horror. I don't mind body horror, but this constant, over the top, visceral horror where people and animals are being brutally murdered on a constant isn't really my jam.

I read a comic that was a lot like this a long time ago, that I still don't think should have been published. This doesn't quite go to the extreme that comic did, but a lot of the themes of lengths of violence human beings will go to when they're not quite themselves any more felt very similar.

I also didn't care, or root for the main character, her love interest, and I struggled to remember most of the background cast as they exited the scenes. The ending was surprisingly good, although I did struggle to keep up with the science of the story.

3.75/5 rounded up.

Horror/sci-fi, fairly dark and bloody, with a strong protagonist in Lucy and a good group of survivors around her.

What even is this book?

It started out promising, reminded me of World War Z. I was intrigued. Then it got dumb. Then it got stupid. Then it just kept getting worse.

Is this really YA? Soooo much swearing and sexual talk. I'm fine with that, in the right context, but these were a bunch of high schoolers...which seemed REALLY out of place. Maybe I'd have liked it better with adults. I don't buy that these kids had any smarts in them. Like, at all.

Also, wow, please cool it with the ignorant slurs against foreign kids. That's not needed. Just have other kids make fun of their clothes or something. That got excessive. Two books in a row tonight filled with slurs. Sigh.

I received an advanced reader copy of The Loop from Gallery Books/Saga Press via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion.

The Loop by Jeremy Robert Johnson is a story about survival and good conquering evil. Lucy and her friend, Bucket, are constantly harassed at school by the rich kids. Strange things have been happening to the teens in Turner Falls, Oregon, so Lucy surprises herself when she agrees to go to a party with Bucket and his friend, Brewer.

At the party Lucy, Bucket and Brewer witness other teens victimizing others in disturbing ways. Barely escaping with their lives, Lucy, Bucket and Brewer head home looking for safety only to find deserted streets and damaged properties. Will Lucy, Bucket and Brewer be able to save themselves and the town? Or will they fall victims to whatever has taken over the other teens in town?

This was an easy read, that I just couldn’t get into. I do enjoy science fiction but this was a bit gory with a slow pace. If you’re looking for a present day AI book, The Loop may be just what you’re looking for and is available today, September 29, 2020.

Things go downhill pretty quickly in what can accurately be compared to World War Z meets Pines (Blake Crouch) meets Stanger Things.

Fast past narrative. Plot unravels without much pause and not much time for the characters to catch their breath. Time is of the essence when citizens basically become psychotic and sadistic murderers.

Think the first third got me hooked. The middle section kind of dragged for me. The ending was just right. I did finish reading the book with some questions. Overall I enjoyed it.

Thanks to NetGalley for the copy.

A very long time later, I finally read The Loop as an ARC. It was engaging, and freaky, gory, and crass, and gross, and I really appreciated the stance the author took on the, "You think this outbreak is a conspiracy theory, but it's actually very very real."

As always, when I finish a book I enjoyed, even with it's flaws, I recognize how difficult it is to actually write a complete novel, which is quite the accomplishment in it's own right.

Overall a fun read, just maybe not one for bedtime.

Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

DNF at 49%.

The book is billed as a mix of Stranger Things and World War Z, but these are overly generous comparisons. I'm a squeamish dabbling horror reader who still really loved those two stories. Their appeal was the world building, relationships between characters, and use of different entry points into the story -- three things that felt sorely lacking for someone who came to the story expecting them based on the description.

The first two chapters were strong and compelling, but I struggled to get through the cave scene and just couldn't come back from there. There was some crudeness early on that just didn't sit well with me, and then made me question whether I was being a prude, until I saw other reviews make the same point.
