I really enjoyed this novella. After what I found to be a slow start I was quickly invested in Anna Lightwood’s story. She is so badass and I’d love to learn more about her – and that’s not something I usually find after reading a novella about entirely new characters in the Shadowhunter Chronicles.

This is definitely my favorite of all of Cassandra Clare’s novellas. I’ve never felt so validated in a novella like this. This made me cry tears of joy and sadness. This just makes me even more excited to read Chain of Gold because we finally have the lesbian queen that we deserve (possibly nonbinary? I love Anna either way). She is probably one of my favorite protagonists of Cassie as well, and this also just makes me want to read all of Ghosts of the Shadow Market. I highly recommend you read this because it was just fantastic!

It was so so fun getting to know the characters a little deeper, although the romance in this novella seemed quite unrealistic.

“Anna means ‘favor,’ as in ‘God has favored me.’ I thought the Angel had favored me with you, and I would make sure you were always happy, always content.”

While I didn’t find Anna Lightwood particularly compelling, I appreciate her self-awareness and her commitment to being a woman before her time in terms of gender identity and sexuality. Her parents being so accepting of her was lovely to see as well. Unfortunately her concerns about clothing and fawning over crushes doesn’t resonate with my interests as a reader, irregardless of the above significance.
