This book was achingly beautiful. The way he reminisces about their past home and all the happy memories he has compared to his son's horrible ones is heart breaking. The thought of handing your family over to the whims of the sea is frightening but as a parent I get why they would do it and that makes me so sad. It was a great book about what we want for our kids, the lengths we are willing to go to protect them, and the difficult choices some families have to make.

By the end of this book, I was a mess. NANGIS BANGET!
This book might be short, but it's a powerful and beautifully illustrated. Although the setting is Syria, the story speaks to the plight of refugees everywhere. Tears welled up—thinking about the situation in Palestine on top of that just made it even harder to read. It makes me want to do something, anything, to help. Ya Allah...

I was so excited for this book. I preordered months and months ago. I, like so many others, was expecting more. I opened the box and was disappointed at the size and that it looked more like a children’s book.
But I should have known better. There’s a reason Khalid Hosseini is one of my favorite authors. No, this wasn’t what I was expecting but it was beautiful, the writing and the illustrations, it was meaningful, and it gets its point across.
I was hoping for more but am satisfied with what I received. I’ll still be waiting for his next book though with great anticipation!

“You have learned that mothers and sisters and classmates can be found in narrow gaps between concrete, bricks and exposed beams, little patches of sunlit skin shining in the dark.”
