This review contains a small spoiler. I’d like to start off by saying that this book has been on my kindle for literal years, and I wish I had read it sooner. It was very well written with good world building and lovable characters. One thing I liked the most was that (small spoiler) the main character wasn’t the “chosen one”, but instead it was her brother. Just felt sort of refreshing. I can’t wait to see what the next book brings. I’m excited to learn more about the magic system.

Cully Mack ushers us into a fantastic, rich, and well-lived in world.

With fully fleshed out characters, demons, other dimensions, high-stakes and strong themes, A Voice That Thunders is a brilliant first entry, one that demands you read the next. I particularly enjoyed the magic system with how integral it is to the world and story.

Super twist on the chosen one trope, too.

When Mirah's clan was destroyed, she was "rescued" and brought to a world of magic and wonder, but as with all good things, she would learn that her new world was also filled with many dangers. Hers is a fantastic journey filled with twists and revelations and might and magic.

This book was a wonderful surprise to me. Like many other readers have said, once I started, it was hard to put down. I had to find out what was happening with Mirah, Nate, Gabe, and Galia, to name a few of the fantastic characters in this book. There is an elemental magic system unlike anything I've ever read, but not everyone is chosen to be a magic wielder. Some are healers, others the mysterious Chasmalim. There are gods, demi-gods (giants), and both ordinary and not-so-ordinary mortals. And their stories intertwined and unfolded beautifully.

I wish I could live there for short while and witness everything that she experienced. But I don't want to spoil the fun. You'll have to read it for yourself.

This book is hands down amazing. I could truly find myself in the story at all points. The balance of world building, character building and just the suspense of what’s to come was spot on.

I found it very easy to read where I didn’t feel overwhelmed with information, while the building of each section of the world I found room for my imagination to take care of the minor details often over explained.

The depth and thought that went into each character was showing through each new love, loss and every other emotion I went through. It was a wild roller coaster I didn’t want to end.

What I loved most was the unique plot. God like men, with the magic of the earth (air, wind, fire, water ) plus the devastation of war to come.

I can’t wait to start book 2!

A Voice That Thunders is a stunning entry into a new fantasy world and is full of tension, magic and beautiful world-building. Despite being a completely different genre, something about it reminded me of A Thousand Ships by Natalie Hayes, which was one of my top books for 2020. It had got that feel of a slow build mythology crossed with historical, even though it sits firmly in the fantasy genre.

This is a novel with intricate and careful world building set around Gods, half Gods and the frailty of mortals. When Mirah's entire village is destroyed, she is one of the few survivors, all girls and all taken as captive to serve Shemyaza. They aren';t the only survivors though; her brother wasn't present when the raiders hit and it turns out that he might have a far larger role to play than either of them could ever have expected.

This pulls from various fantasy tropes such as elemental magic, but weaves it into something entirely of its own. It's beautifully written, with characters that truly feel real. And the semi dual narrative worked brilliantly; with most of the novel told from Mirah’s perspective, but get a close hand view of the few girls who survived the village massacre. But the occasional shift to those working to free the girls added depth and additional layers to the events of the novel.

I think the only think I wasn’t keen on was the romance angle. But I’ll admit, romance as a primary arc never interests me… and the whole star crossed lovers thing is a bit of a sore spot for me. I am aware that the romance angle is otherwise highly popular though and it was well written, so I can't really take points off for it. I just kind of wish it wasn't there.

If you're looking for a really strong blend between fantasy and mythological history, this will likely be right up your street. It certainly impressed me.

What a wonderful book and a great start to the series. Cully creates a magical world full of amazing characters and creatures, and as the story progressed, I found I couldn’t put the book down. I wanted to know what happened next. And I just love the cover! The story begins with a violent attack on a peaceful village, where the attackers are violent blood- thirsty giants, the sons of a god and they leave none alive. Except for six girls who are taken as 'tithes' and begin a long journey back to be tested by Shemyaza, the god of his world. Cully creates wonderful characters that you can relate to. You are rooting for the girls and sympathise with their situation. Great read. Add it to your list. Look forward to reading Book two: A Voice that Screams.

This book started with a bang and keep the tension going long enough that I didn't want to put the book back down. I did not expect any of the twists! The writing is beautiful and the emotions feel raw. The only things I wasn't thrilled with were the Stockholm vibe of the relationship between the two main characters or the twist with the amulets giving the characters power being connected to evil beings.
