Read at a pace which says a lot about the plotting of this, clever.

The second in Herron's Oxford series features Zoë, after Sarah took center stage in the last book, and it's a treat to be with her. Except that she agonizes over everything, over and over, and it takes 200 pages before the suspense ratchets up. By the time he wrote the most excellent Slough House books, Herron had learned to cut to the chase and to show not tell, and the books are better for it. But I'd like to see Zoë and Sarah again, so I'll continue.

I understand when the protagonist is in danger as they investigate, but when they become the victim...I soon lose interest. In series, they seem to start with an interesting story line of investigation and an interesting own-life, and eventually they seem perfectly merged. I'm investigating a crime where I'm the victim.

I love the Slow Horses series so was excited to try a book by the same author which had a female lead. Sadly this just wasn't for me and I was left feeling an unusual combination of meh and confused.

I am kind of amazed that I have been enjoying this series so much. Mick Herron has a wonderful eye. The books are hilarious, as well as interesting along the lines of a crime novel.

Book 2 and I'm not getting overly excited yet, it flowed along pretty seamlessly and was done and dusted in short order, but like a bowl of bran it will be gone tomorrow, as regular as clockwork.
Summing up - an average read.

I'm really enjoying this series. Zoe Boehm is a private detective who specializes in finding people. But in this story, she gets sidetracked by a second crime that may or may not be related to her main case, and it proves to be a big one. She almost gets people killed, including herself. Being a woman, uses brains over brawn and weapons, and does a good job although she doesn't usually come out unscathed.

The book continues somewhat from the previous book, so reading it first will make it more enjoyable, but it's not necessary, as everything you need to know is explained.

I'm a big fan of this author. I read all his Slough House series. This series is older, so not as good, but still very enjoyable.
