The Boys is a very character driven novel. The first half focusses on the growing relationship between Ethan and Barb, their marriage and how it is impacted by the arrival of their eight year old foster sons Sam and Tommy, the boys of the title. Ethan becomes increasingly devoted to their care and well-being; Barb less so which creates tension between them. And then comes a surprising twist which makes the reader reassess what happened in the first half of the novel and their reaction to it.

For me the power if the novel hung on Ethan. As a character study this novel was a poignant masterclass. He was so awkward and vulnerable, very introverted, desperate to do the right thing as a way of controlling the dangers he saw in the world and keeping those he loved safe. As a character he really tugged on my heartstrings, doubtless because he reminded me a lot of someone in my own life. Learning his backstory was heartbreaking but I loved his journey of growth over the novel. The differing reaction of strangers on the cycling trip he took with the boys also caught my attention. If only everyone could respond to those who they perceive as being different with kindness and empathy, an attempt at understanding rather than thoughtless belittling.

The Covid pandemic plays a role in this book. If you aren’t ready to read about that, this won’t be the book for you. For others I think this is a small, quiet, unassuming gem, one that left its emotional mark on me.

What a gem of a book! This story follows a man in his late 30s caring for his two foster children as he approaches the 30th anniversary of his parents’ death. It’s a frustrating read in the best way - and that twist!!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Orange Sky Audio for this excellent audiobook.
