I loooooved the West African inspired world building in this, such a breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre where so many novels are rooted in precolonial/medieval Europe. However, the characters felt very flat to me - I wasn't able to connect or care about them much, and there were even some character deaths that I'm sure were meant to be heartbreaking but just... didn't affect me? The writing was overall pretty well done but leaned a little too much into Brandon-Sanderson-style lack of subtlety. Which, as we know, I am not a massive fan of. Overall very solid though, will likely be picking up the sequel when it is released.

Not sure why it’s not clicking for me, it just isn’t. Maybe it’s just really info-dumpy at the beginning?

I really liked this book. It has all the feeling of a traditional fantasy, but in a landscape wand with characters that felt interesting and fresh - not the typical European medieval-style fantasy that I grew up reading.

I really loved the ibor, and how its use extracted a steep price; and how, like any resource, indiscriminate use will use it up. That’s a great way to include the working of magic into a world.

Good book. Happy to have it on my shelves.

It starts really slow and there is so much detail to the world build that I got lost. Nearly 100 pages in and nothing seems to have really happened, I haven't connected with any of the characters and the stakes seem unimportant.
