Rei Toma consistently delivers amazing stories and art. I'm a fan girl and I can tell I'll be obsessed with this series. Oh I also loved the little bonus Water Dragon Bride story at then end !

5 quests for vengeance out of 5 girls pretending to be boys omg I love that trope so much

Better than other Rei Toma series I've tried, but I felt that the prostitution aspect of the worldbuilding was very disturbing, even though it wasn't shown. The prince caring so much so quickly about the ajin feels unrealistic.

Ooof what a big kick in the feels. Rei Toma is back with a vengeance! I think this is possibly set in the world of Dawn of the Arcana? We have the Ajin again, and the story follows the horrific racism and slavery in this world. Our antagonist this time is an Ajin herself, and she is disguising herself as a male in order to become the Prince’s personal servant, in order to avenge her brothers death. But when she does gain the position, she quickly realizes the Prince was never responsible for her brother’s death, and in fact is still mourning his murder.

This was pretty dark, but I felt dealt with pretty delicately. Most of this first volume was just establishing Rangetsu’s past and trauma, and slowly getting her to a place where she can begin to trust Prince Tenyou. The scenes mirroring the kindness Prince Tenyou showed her brother and now her were so bloody bitter sweet. I honestly got close to tearing up. I’m not sure how I feel about the romance, there seems to be a considerable age gap, but we don’t know Rangetsu’s age so I’m a little weary. I also worry this will be like The Water’s Gods Bride, where I never felt like the love interest became fleshed out enough for me to care. Hopefully the Prince is a bit more fleshed out in this one as the story progresses. Also, it goes without saying with Toma that the art was amazing, it is always 5 stars in quality for me.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve seen a lot of characters that look like our main protagonist. They were giving me Tomoe vibes from Kamisama Kiss, one of my favourite manga series, and I was intrigued because the art style is gorgeous. It’s one of the delights of reading this manga. The art is breathtaking and gives you an ethereal vibe to the world and the characters. It reminded me of a lot of other styles, like Yona of the Dawn. I get the sense that there were many inspirations that brought this to life and it’s interesting to pick out where they might be from. The style is romantic and very shojo, but I like that it openly embraces it.

I was excited for the story. The ideas behind it have a lot to be explored with, and while I did like them I feel like this story is lacking something. It needed a bit more fleshing out in terms of character and story. The beast subplot doesn’t have much explanation, and the characters are very thin for me to want to root for them. I also thought it didn’t help how the main conflict of Rangetsu wanting to kill the prince only to find out he didn’t kill her brother was resolved too soon and it made the rest of the volume feel directionless. It was her main motivation. It just seemed a bit too quick after just learning her goals.

This is a promising volume that has an interesting world, great ideas, and an art style that just takes your breath away. The story has the potential to improve and I look forward to where it will head.
