I love Murakami's fiction books. I picked this up years ago and somehow just got around to reading it. It was easy reading, an enjoyable run alongside Haruki as he traces his life as a runner and novelist. I have lived in some of the spots he finds himself in throughout the book, and it was fun to read his travels through those places. He reflects on aging, which provides some food for thought--while sometimes I found myself nodding along, at other times I found his self-reflections stark to the point of bleak. As a sometimes long distance runner myself (unlike Murakami I have not been immune to sidelining injuries, so my own path has not been so continuous), he well describes the mindset of those of us who like to run not for competition but to prove something to ourselves. And, of course, for the enjoyment (and sometimes pain) of it. If you like Murakami, I recommend this as it shines some light on him as a person as well as his writing process.

Inspired me to sign up for two ultras the day of. I am a triathlete and marathoner so I quite enjoyed his descriptions.
it def. was interesting. gave more insights into running marathons, writing and bits of murakami's daily routines. went a bit philosohical a few times and i feel like my mindset towards movement and the body might have shifted a bit bc of this book

honestly murakami is such a cool dude. guy actually ran a jazz club and drank/smoked daily before quitting cold turkey just to write and he just sort of went Hmm Why Don't I Go Running and he's never stopped since then.
i used to be really anxious about running in public without any music, but this book (amongst other things) made me just appreciate the blankness you get while you're running. it's a surreal experience just being accompanied by your own tiredness and your surroundings and your steady breaths as you just get out there.
running has become something that's meant a lot to me in the past few months, and i'm glad this book exists because i feel like it's articulated everything i've ever felt while learning how to run again.
