More of a 3.5 than a 3. The writing got progressively better over the course of the series, although it still ended up a little sparse and non-descriptive for my liking. Deltora Quest's real strength lies in its cast of characters, specifically the trio of Lief, Jasmine, and Barda. Jasmine remains my favorite character of all the books. My favorite secondary character is probably Steven the peddler with the beast of a brother or Dain. Also, I totally called the big character reveal in the last book; I had it since the first book since Rodda has a bad habit of telegraphing major plot twists ahead of time, even when attempting to confuse the reader with red herrings. I will definitely be reading the sequel series.

This book holds so much nostalgia because it was assigned reading in primary school. That being said it still holds a lot of weight upon reading as an adult.

The writing needs to be considered as a middle school read and even then it is surprisingly sophisticated. It’s pleasant to read with memorable characters despite their simplicity. It is colourful, enchanting and absolutely mesmerising. The use of riddles and puzzles was intelligent and enjoyable. The writing was economical and aware of the world building which is quite robust.

A must read for anyone young and mildly interested in fantasy and any adult really so long as you go in aware that this is a middle school read.

The greatest book series of all time, including the complete works of William Shakespeare, Leo Tolstoy, or Garth Marenghi.
