Okay I became introduced to Kristoff's work through the Illuminae files, and it had become one of my favorite series so I was eager to start this series. To be honest, I really loved this book. I understand it's not for everyone. Just let it sink this is a Young-Adult, Dystopian, Sci-fi, Romance novel. The main character is a teenager Eve Carpenter who eventually learns her life isn't what she thinks it is.

And when things go bad for Eve, they really go bad for Eve. She lives with her grandfather, best friend Lemon, a robot made to follow her orders named Cricket, and a robotic dog. The timeline is set far into the future after a fourth world war, and the USA is practically destroyed by radiation from the war.

A strange boy arrives claiming to be from her past, and her grandfather gets kidnapped. Eve, Lemmon, the new boy Ezekiel, Cricket, and her dog travel the dangerous journey to Eve's birth place to look for her grandfather and stop a serial killing life-like robot and his small family. I don't think I can add a whole lot more without ruining surprises, though I admit some of them weren't really all that surprising. if you forget everything you know about story structure, and just read the story for the story's sake I think it's a great read. But like I said, this mix of genre's may not be everyone's cup of tea...just put that into consideration when reading Likel1k3

I need to ruminate on my rating for this one because ITS COMPLICATED.

Jay Kristoff did it again.

Sci-fi is usually a hit or miss for me and so far this is the second one I enjoyed a lot. First one being Illuminae.

1st Readthrough 5 ⭐
So now that I've had a chance to calm down, I shall write a short and succinct review.

It. Was. Epic.

Heavily channeling the Mad Max movies, this book is a dystopian tale, following Eve and her friends as they unravel Eve's past. Full of twists and turns in true Kristoff style, this action packed tale is a great for the senses.

Kristoff's signature slang helps builds atmosphere and makes the characters stories believable. I found the explanation of the different forms of android/robots at the start quite useful while also admiring the ingenuity in changing the rules of robotics to better serve the publication with the use of angry droids and computer viruses.

one of the best new entries into the YA fantasy genre in a long while

2nd Read through 4.5⭐
I still enjoyed it but this time it was a little less. Maybe its because I've read other better things in the past 2 years but i mean, I still really liked it so

The plot picked up at the very end, and I did like the twist. I did not like the writing style though. Kinda silly.

WHAT?!

Evie and her best friend, Lemon, live in a future world that is ravaged by war and run by machines. When they find a LifeLike in the scrap yard and take it home, they discover it is more than expected. Seemingly like a real person, it alters the course of their lives and sends them on the run from bounty-hunters and religious fanatics alike.

This book was packed with non-stop action. The world-building was great, I really imagined it all as I read it. My one problem was with all the made-up lingo. It reminded me of how [b:The Maze Runner|6186357|The Maze Runner (The Maze Runner, #1)|James Dashner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1375596592l/6186357._SY75_.jpg|6366642] did that as well. So those who liked the writing style of [b:The Maze Runner|6186357|The Maze Runner (The Maze Runner, #1)|James Dashner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1375596592l/6186357._SY75_.jpg|6366642] would probably really enjoy [b:LIFEL1K3|29456569|LIFEL1K3 (Lifelike, #1)|Jay Kristoff|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1516369970l/29456569._SY75_.jpg|49731905]. It just wasn't my favorite writing style.

The ending though. It is what bumped the book up from a 3 star to a 4 star for me.
Spoiler I love being surprised. I did not expect Evie to be an android! And the fact that she walked away from Lemon broke my heart. It also explained the fervor of her seemingly love for Ezekiel. I had been thinking it was cheesy, but finding out she had only been alive a few years and was learning to experience her emotions anew explained it.
. I can't wait to pick up book 2! I highly recommend this book for those who love action, adventure, and robots!

Devastated that this just does not hit the spot! I love me some Jay Kristoff but I just couldn't get into it.

This description is what made me pick up the book in the first place and now it's over, I don't even know what to make of it. My brain has exploded. To be inside Jay Kristoffs mind must be a total trip. This guy has an imagination that is so batsh*t crazy!

The first few chapters were super confusing as I struggled to understand where I was, what was happening and whether I liked it. I contemplated giving up... thank Yoda I don't live in the alternate universe where I did that.

This plot is mental! The characters are cool and there's so much weird to keep your brain in a constant state of "wtf"

Jay is an arsehole. He ripped my heart out and made me cry more than once. This story is so good and the twists were pretty damn sneaky/genius so I guess I'll keep reading the series....... dammit. More post-apocalyptic heartache. Bring. It. On.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars.
I’m like equal parts angry and disappointed by the ending of this book. Everything was bearable until the verryyyyy end when everyone started acting totally out of characters and I LITERALLY DIDNT UNDERSTAND WHY?! WHAT IS HAPPENING?! Also, why is no one mentioning that this is like 110% a “retelling” of the Russian royal family that was killed in the early 1900s... and that brings me to my next point, what is with the blurb on the cover I got NO Romeo and Juliet vibes, no x-men vibes and no blade runner vibes! I AM SO DISAPPOINTED! Bloody overhyped books will be the death of me! Oh and I hate Zeke. It turns out I hate all male love interest characters that Jay writes. Lol.

You know that feeling you get, when you find a book that has you saying..."just one more chapter and then I will go to bed" and then then next chapter ends and you still keep reading, because you can't stop? This book did that for me. I read the last 200 pages of this book in one night and wouldn't let my husband speak to me until I was done.

I'm going to be completely honest, I went into this ONLY because Jay Kristoff wrote it. I was a bit worried based on the description. I was worried it would be a little too weird for me. I'm not usually a fan of robots and AI in novels, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was immediately hooked and can't wait to finish this trilogy.

In true Kristoff fashion this book hit me straight in the feelings and wrecked me in the end. And I loved every second of it.
