Okay finished this and this was such a pleasant surprise. I abhor Jay Kristoff writing like his slangs suck but man the twists were so good and the last part had me hooked.
Like the man can write some good twists and action scenes were pretty okay but man is his writing bad like so bad. Still a very high 3.5 ⭐️ and definitely continuing with the series just for this twists

I am torn between a 3.5 and a 4 star rating ... In one hand I really enjoyed the plot line .. Mister Kristoff keeps us on out tows from beginning to end. I didn't see the end coming haha
BUT ... I am not a fan of his writing style :( Lot's of made up words, repetition ... I really want to keep on with this serie just to see where everything is going so will see ... :)

Like last year I started 2021 with a book by Jay Kristoff and hoped it wouldn´t turn out a one star read again. But no, this book was quite enjoyable. It´s light and fast-paced and I really liked the concept of the Lifelike. It did draw up some philosophical questions and I always like when books are able to do that and still be action-packed. It was also pretty funny and I really appreciate how Kristoff is experimenting with writing. Compared to ILLUMINAE and Nevernight it was more subtle, but still new and exciting.
On the other hand, the book also had some flaws. First, I didn´t care about the love story and second, I needed more information on characters and world. The final details were missing. Ezekial was nothing more than the love-interest and for more than half of the book, Lemon was only the best friend. I liked her development, but I still wanted more from her. Being funny is not enough, especially when you are repeating your jokes again and again... And I think Kristoff has made it too easy for himself with some plot developments just by leaving out a lot of information. The story still works which is impressive though.
I´m am excited to see where the story goes from now, but a bit worried about Evie´s development.
In the end, I am indecisive about whether to rate it 3 or 4 stars. Only looking at my reading enjoyment it´s more of a 3-star-read because I wasn´t glued to the pages, rooting for the characters or anything. But it was quite inventive, had cool plot twists and writing. We´ll see how the sequels turn out...

2023 reread
Not quite sure how I feel about this after the reread. While I did enjoy it and find it entertaining, I just really felt disconnected from the characters and the story, and didn't really care.. maybe cause I already knew the huge plot twist and how things were going to end? Also the quirkiness and cheesy parts were kinda getting on my nerves, but most of the time they were.. amusing.
Still kinda curious to see what will happen next, so we'll see how that goes I guess.
________
Jay Kristoff is an evil, cruel man. He will draw you into his stories, get you completely hooked up. Then right near the end -when you least expect it, he will stab you in the back, cut your heart out and turn the world upside down right over your poor little head. You won't even know what hit you, and you won't regret a single thing that led to this.
Sorry, I just had to let at least a fraction of what I'm currently feelingand not feeling out.
It's easy to say that this book has left me completely speechless, and with a load of trust issues and a ton of unidentified feelings. It had one of the biggest plot twist I've come across so far.
I don't know what to do with my life right now..
I need Dev1at3 right now..
I'll just crawl under a rock and sleeptry to recover till Dev1at3 is out.

Whaattttt is with Mr Kristoff and those damn endings? Why can't we be happy for more than a paragraph, sir?
Of course, I enjoyed this book. My one qualm was the way some of the character spoke. Their lingo annoyed me. But, alas, that is a me issue. Not a real book issue.
