First off, Jay Kristoff. Holy hell can the man write! I love his writing style! Its beautiful in places, intense in others. I laugh out loud at his character's dialogue and his characterizations and plot points always move me to tears! I was already a huge fan of his from reading he and Amie Kaufman's series The Illuminae Files, but I will definitely have to read more of his books!
Ok fangirling out of the way now, you came to hear about this book which is set to be released in just a few short weeks.
I will start with not-so-good things only because there aren't too many of them! At first the language and terminology is a little strange and almost difficult to follow. Jay does include a glossary at the beginning to define commonly used words throughout the book to describe the various kinds of machines and robots. It does help some but took some time to get used to. His characters also use made up words like "fizzy" meaning "cool" or "good" but in a way, I rather liked these terms because it just helps to add to the scenery and time period that this is in the future and the world is definitely a different place. That said, once you got used to the different terminology, the plot really moves!
It is definitely a faced paced, action packed story (which I love!) There is not one part of this book that is dull, boring, or lacking nor does it have any "filler" type or unncessary chapters. Every word is relevant to the story and serves the purpose of pushing the plot along.
In true Jay Kristoff form, this story is not without its twists and turns. Every character had a secret and every scene had a new mystery to solve. At first I was worried there were TOO many mysteries and elements but they all came together beautifully at the end and left me BLOWN AWAY!
The charcaters are fantastic! I especially loved the character of Lemon Fresh. She was so funny and caused me to laugh out loud on multiple occasions! Also the evolution of the characters was a beautiful thing to behold. Especially the character of Eve. She had a whirlwind of character evolution and is the character I am most excited to learn more about in the next book!
In short, this book is pretty flipping fantastic! Other than the few terminology issues in the beginning, I don't have anything negative to say!
I highly recommend you run to the bookstore on May 29th and pick this book up! I promise you will not be disappointed!
I've been a fan of Jay Kristoff for a quite some time now. Before he co-wrote the thrill ride that was Illuminae, he had written a steampunk sci-fi fantasy series names The Lotus Wars, set in feudal Japan, filled with magical creatures, deadly machines, and some pretty epic swordfights.
Basically, what I'm saying is that I've known from the very start that I was going to end up reading whatever Jay Kristoff wrote and that I was going to love it.
But I didn't love this one. And it's not entirely the book's fault.
By all means, I should have loved this. It has everything I could want in a book, and then some. The action was none stop, from the opening lines to the last sentence of the novel, it was a complete roller coaster.
The charcters were fun and compelling and there is a brilliant example of female friendship in this one between Lemon and Eve (and yes, her name is Lemon and I love her). Also with Cricket who was such an entertaining addition to the gang. And let's not forget about Zeke, who only got better as the book progressed because let's be real, for the first few chapters he had the personality of a toaster.
The writing was super fun and fluid. The plot was engaging and fun and interesting. There were many many twists, some of which took me entirely by surprise and left me speechless, some of which didn't surprise me at all, but that's to be expected.
Sadly, my life has been quite hectic lately, and to make matters worse, I'm currently in a serious slump so I wasn't able to enjoy this as I would have liked. I can't blame the book for that
Another thing for which I can't really blame the book is that I could kind of predict when and how things were going to happen. This though is mostly an effect of reading so many books and knowing how stories tend to work, especially when you've read several of that author's books.
Although the slump and the busy life and all the inconveniences that have been plaguing me lately all influenced my low rating, there were some problems I would have had with the book regardless.
The main issue being the romance aspect. I felt a little...flat? A little weird, maybe? A little too Romeo & Juliet?
Also, the pitch is “Romeo & Juliet meets Mad Max meets X-Men, with a little bit of Blade Runner cheering from the sidelines”. I guess it does have elements of all these things, and in fact does have a scene that looked taken right out of Mad Max, but I feel like a more accurate description would be Pinocchio meets I, Robot meets Anastasia, with a little bit of Paradise Lost dropping biblical references from above, but I guess that didn't sound cool enough.
I think if I weren't in a slump this would have been a four-star read, for sure. If my life weren't going to crap right now, and I had read it in less than the three weeks it took me to finish, I would have enjoyed this so much more.
But that's not how it all went down.
So, do I recommend this book? Sure. It's a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride. It's fun and futuristic and very Jay Kristoff-ish.
I just don't think I was in the right mindset to really read this book. I will definitely be trying to read the sequel because I'm actually really curious at two what happens next.
*** This last part involves a very minor spoiler! Heck, it might not even be considered a spoiler. Read at your own peril! ***
Spoiler
I don't know if y'all caught on to this, but I was getting some serious Anastasia retelling vibes all throughout, and then that ending confirmed it all! Anastasia Monrova, daughter of Nicholas and Alexandra Romanov = Anastasia Romanov, daughter of Nicholas and Alexis Monrova.I wonder if book two is going to focus more on the this Anastasia retelling part of the plot. I'm really excited about it.

“The walls were crashing in. Two lives, colliding like stars inside her mind.”
I don't know how Jay Kristoff does it, but he always ends up surprising me. I went into this book only knowing that it was described as a mix between Mad Max, Romeo & Juliet, Blade Runner and X-Men. I've never watched Blade Runner so I don't know if this book has some vibes from that story, but I can definitely see elements of X-Men, Romeo & Juliet and especially of Mad Max.
LIFEL1K3 is a dystopian and sci-fi book set in a post-apocalyptic United States where robots (automata, machina and logika) exist and are governed by the Three Laws of Robotics. The main protagonist is Eve, a scavvergirl who battles as a dome fighter against robots in the WarDome in order to get the medicine for his grandfather. But her world is about to change when she discovers the remains of an android boy.
This is one of the most original books I've ever read. A loose retelling of Anastasia with western elements and set in a post-apocalyptic world. I mean, this is one of the coolest ideas ever. And overall, I enjoyed this book. But I found the pacing too rushed and I didn't understand a couple of decisions that some characters made. I also think the romance isn’t executed too well, although I loved the impact the ending has on it.
I also liked the writing, but I have to admit that I much prefer the metaphorical style Jay Kristoff uses in Nevernight. His writing in LIFEL1K3 is okay, but it's much simpler.
My favourite aspects of this book are the parts set in the past, where we get to know the Monrova family and their dynamics with the lifelikes. I also liked the final plot twists—I definitely didn't see the last chapter coming. The setting is also very captivating and I hope the author will explore it more in the next books.
But as I've already pointed out, the pacing is a bit off. The story takes place in a couple of days, so I found the action and the dynamic between Eve and Ezekiel a bit rushed. I think I would have loved this book much more if it had taken place in a longer period of time.
So overall, this is a really interesting dystopian and sci-fi book with a fascinating premise. I can't wait to know what happens next. Hopefully, we'll get to know more about the Monrova family in the second installment, because I really loved the parts about them.

When walking home with her Logika Cricket and bestest Lem, Eve stumbles across an android boy missing an arm. Not only is he an android, he's a Lifelike: an outlawed Logika which were no longer produced after the original prototypes started killing humans. They take the Lifelike home to Eve's grandfather and are confused when he wakes up, claiming that he knows Eve and her grandfather. But he knows Eve as Ana. Who is Ana, and how does the strange Lifelike know Eve??
So I'm not a huge sci-fi/dystopian fan, but my gosh, this book blew my mind! Eve gave me Cinder vibes at the beginning but very quickly, I realised this book is nothing like anything I've ever read before. I loved the twists and the turns (and there are so many good twists) and this book constantly kept me on my toes.
The first half of the book I was just totally confused, trying to piece together what was happening and what had happened, etc. But that second half once the reveals start coming. Oh boy! This has to be one of the best books I've read this year, if not ever. I just loved it!
Highly recommend to everyone!! Just need to get started on the sequel. I NEED ANSWERS!!!
Lifel1k3 throws us into a post apocalyptic world of sorts where much of the land is barren and a wasteland. Our MC Eve lives with her Grandfather and a little robot companion named Cricket. She also has the cutest little robot puppy named Kaiser who stole my heart the minute he bounded on to the page. Damn you Kristoff!!!! When a ship crashes in her path on night, Eve and her bestest friend Lemon find what appears to be a Lifelike piloting the ship - which is weird in itself as the Lifelike program was terminated years ago. But as this mystery deepens, Eve's past comes sailing back in and makes her question just what is real and what lies has she been told.
This story had highs and lows for me. It was divided into four parts and the first part was a little slow going for me. I know that Kristoff had to explain this world that we had jumped into but it didn't pace well for me and I was still a little confused. Then the second part happened and in this one we get a crap ton of flashbacks and that only added to my confusion as I tried to keep all the characters straight that were suddenly there. But OMG the last two parts - these are what I wanted! I stayed up well into the night just to finish these (and bit off most of the nails on my right hand). Talk about secrets being revealed in the worst possible way!
Another thing Kristoff did was he made me love robots. Cricket and Kaiser were two of my faves and I hurt whenever they were hurt. (view spoiler) I also loved Ezekiel and was super intrigued by the flashbacks with all of the other Lifelikes. Eve was also a good heroine. I felt for her and rooted for her...but that ending though!!!
I need the next book like NOW because that ending was not okay!! You hear that Kristoff??
I will definitely pick up the next book since I trust Jay to develop this into a series that I can get excited about. But as far as first books go, it wasn’t the most impressive I have ever encountered.
