I only took off ½ a star because at times it was a bit repetitive. I kept wondering if somehow I forgot where I was in the book because I was re-reading something I had just read. A lot of the same dialogue over and over got a little tiresome. Also I was able to guess the big reveal right away. However, even if I was able to guess the reveal it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t an awesome reveal so I can’t really fault the story for that.
I absolutely loved the world building. I felt completely immersed in this world while I was reading the story and the landscape was so vivid that it felt like it was real… “lifelike” even. (I’m so sorry. But the pun was there so I had to do it!)
The ending wasn’t at all what I was expecting. If I’m being 100% honest, it felt disingenuous to Evie as a character. I didn’t understand her decisions toward the end. Was she emotional? Yes, definitely. And when people are emotional they make rash decisions. Was she logical? Not really. I remember saying out loud at one point “Well that escalated quickly…” because her reactions and decisions are all over the place and didn’t feel harmonious to who she was throughout the rest of the story. Regardless, I’m still super interested to see what comes next for Evie especially with everything being turned on its head by the end.

^ See those numbers up there? That's four out of five stars, which means I really enjoyed this book. I'm gonna need y'all to keep that in mind because I prooomise that I really did actually quite like this book a lot, despite the complaints I'm about to drop. But first, the good!
Jay Kristoff is amazing at creating characters. While the MC, Eve, was by far not my favorite, she's still pretty great. The beauty of LIFEL1K3 lies in its supporting cast. Miss Lemon Fresh is one of THE BEST characters I've read in 2018 and I'd honestly like an entire series that focuses just on her getting every person she comes across to unwittingly admit how cute she is. The plucky little- hee hee- robot Cricket is also a delight to read.
LIFEL1K3 is a fast, fun read, with lots of humor. The world building is excellent. I absolutely love the vibe that Kristoff created with this story, while not wholly original, it's definitely something I haven't really seen in YA specifically.
Speaking of originality... There were times that LIFEL1K3 felt so, so derivative. It's SO Blade Runner-meets-Mad Max, but with dashes of Pinnocchio, biblical stories, and another something that I'm not gonna actually say because SPOILERS. And derivative doesn't always mean bad! Everything is derivative of something these days! I just really wanted a bit more Kristoff in this one that I felt like I got. His Nevernight books feel so original, and I guess they've set the bar pretty high for his writing because I feel like LIFEL1K3 just doesn't quite reach that level.
My other complaint is with the character development. I felt like it all happened off the page, before the story even started. I won't go into detail with this one because SPOILERS but I really didn't see many characters grow, either individually or in their relationships with each other, until the very end of the book.
Overall though, LIFEL1K3 is a really fun book to read, with a stellar, if predictable, ending. I can't wait for the sequel, and Jay Kristoff remains one of my favorite authors.
4.5 stars!
If I could convince you to read a sci-fi book because you would never ordinarily reach for one, this would be my recommendation. I don't normally read sci-fi but just happened to win this one in a giveaway. My mind was blown and I asked a good friend if all sci-fi books were like this and she said not usually. She also told me her friend (I give credit to unknown friend) that "It was like Kristoff had an intense fever dream and turned it into a book." -Kibby's friend. I couldn't put it any better myself because there was never a dull moment in this book.
"I've been thinking about what you said." Lemon declared. About whether your past makes you what you are. That's all our memories are, right? The pieces of our yesterdays that make us who we are today?"
There is so much to love about Lifel1ke, the characters are unique and the plot itself is intense. Earlier I stated that there is never a dull moment and it's true, there is absolutely no downtime in this book. It's adventurous to the point of crazy. It's deep and thought provoking about current situations happening around the world. For a young adult book to present that in such a way that young readers can understand and formulate their own thoughts back to the real world is fantastic and truly brilliant.

Every time I turned around there was literally something going on. Whether it was the random but also not random bounty hunter that kept trying to catch Ana or the giant Kraken that really loved Lemon I just couldn't put this down. I absolutely loved the moment where the preachers dog (blitzhound) blows up. It was hilarious but also sad when Kaiser sacrificed himself. My gut tore in several different places because of this book. I need to know what happens but apparently it won't be until next May. Kristoff why did you do this to me (holds head in hands)!?Eve and Lemon against the world together forever. They have such a beautiful friendship throughout this book. I absolutely adored Lemon she was probably my favorite character in the book. She was feisty, funny, and sometimes made you drop the book and hold your sides because you couldn't stop laughing. Evie was an interesting character trying to find herself in the world. She is described with a Fauxhawk I couldn't picture her that way. Cricket was adorable in every sense of the way. He also was feisty comparable to that with a Napoleonic complex. I'm leaving a few other characters out for the sake of not ruining what their involvement is but seriously you need to read this.
Spoiler
What the hell was that ending.!? Why Kristoff why!? I need the next book in my hands like yesterday. I was just not expecting that big of a twist. As if my heart wasn't racing the entire time I read this book we had to leave it on that note not knowing who or where Ana truly is and for him to just up and walk away. I just had an emotional wave crash over me again, just now, because I forgot that "Ana," or "Evie," or new robot without a name just walked back in and acted like what just happened wasn't a thing. I can't.The end of this book will either destroy you or leave you feeling numb. I don't care if you thought this book was predictable (it wasn't by the way) the ending will destroy you. There will be a second book coming out in 2019 for those who wish to wait. But, you could always re-read and go through the emotional "Braintrauma,"again. (;
LIFEL1K3 is like Max: Fury Road, Pinnochio, and Blade Runner all smooshed together. The world is almost unrecognizable. California is its own island because of an earthquake. Corporations are fighting against each other in War 4.0. The Brotherhood rules all with a fantical iron fist. Abnorms and deviates came from proximity to radiation which can result in some pretty spectacular powers. There are all different types of artificial intelligence from lifelikes (now illegal) to logika to bots to blitzhunds, descending in complexity. People can be enhanced cybernetically like Eve is. She was shot in the head as a child, so her eye is robotic along with some of her skull. Technology enhances peoples lives and also irreparably destroys them.
The characters are all lovely people that I rooted for the entire time. Eve has a fauxhawk and a tough attitude with skills to back it up, only necessary living in this time. Her friendship with Lemon Fresh is super supportive, equal, and awesome. Cricket has a bit of a Napoleon complex, but he is the voice of reason throughout the novel. Ezekiel is a literal coin operated boy and developed a relationship with Eve. He's fiercely loyal and fights through anything. This band of misfits (plus a blitzhund) travel around getting into scrapes and fighting their way out of it one way or another. Their dialogue is hilarious to read. Though the story is pretty fantastical and science fiction, the book is at its core about finding where you fit in and choosing your family.
LIFEL1K3 is a crazy in your face science fiction adventure with family and friendship in the center of it all. I did have a few problems with it. Some of the action sequences didn't make sense to me in the way they were described. For instance, there are people shooting pretty close and a storm with literal glass in it, but the main characters get out without a scratch. What??? However, I really loved the ending. It's a bit of a gut punch but totally makes sense and makes me want the next book NOW.
