Sad. So much sadder than I expected it to be. I wasn't dropping tears all over the pages but the ending was just so bittersweet and I loved the way it was written. The characters lacked real substance or depth to them but I didn't find that off-putting. I thought all the anecdotes and the relationships that they all had very sweet and precious. I see other reviews of how it was like reading a 13 year olds babble diary but I liked it. It was simple and portrayed everything she was seeing and feeling through her own eyes and emotions. It was unique. I liked the touch of romance because it added a lighthearted element that again highlighted how young Julia was to be experiencing the end of the earth when she should have been carefree and enjoying her youth. I think that the touch of romance allowed for her to have a glimpse into that reality. The entire topic of the book was very eye opening and dark, something that could well become a true reality for us anytime soon. It was unlike other dystopian styles that I'd read before, it was different and I enjoyed that aspect of it. It felt all too real. I was content with the way the novel ended, it was peaceful which matched with the way the author had written the last few chapters, purely bittersweet. I enjoyed this novel far more than I expected to.
