One of the best novels I've read in a long time. I'm so in love with this book. It is full of so much beauty, depth and complexity. The story gripped me throughout - I loved the narrative method of shifting back and forth between the one day. I would love to see this made into a film too.

Loved the structure - flipping back and forth between years past and a 24-hour window in present day. Enjoyed the character development. Really good writing in terms of description etc. However: the actual story was so beyond far-fetched to me that I was rolling my eyes as I read.

As if some guy you spent two summers with when you were a pre teen (and committed manslaughter with in that time?!) is actually the love of your life that you almost give up your whole happy marriage and family for 50 years later? Maybe I’m naive but that’s just a plot that did not convince me and made the book fall a bit flat.

I had a few issues with this book but there was also a lot to love about it. The Paper Palace and surrounds are so richly described I feel like it’s a place I can escape to in my mind.
I’m not articulate enough to explain my issues with the male themes in this book - but gosh there was a lot of bad men around. It almost felt excessive the amount of abuse/potential for abuse. That is what lost the one star for me. Oh, and the ‘co-incidence’ when two people of the characters ran into each other in a cafe in New York. Please.
I’m not sure I was 100% sold on the depth of the relationship she had with Jonas, that it could rival what she had with Peter. But some great themes about what it means to be a woman and a mother.
I will I’ll be thinking about this book for a while and the themes of the paths you take in life, and the decisions you make and where they can take you…
