This book takes on the mistakes women make in the office from being socialized as girls. I found it extremely helpful, as a lot of the mistakes Frankel says we make are things i do a lot:). Frankel takes on the way we tilt our head and smile when delivering a serious message to the way we sit (sitting on your foot, or with your hands in your lap instead of on the table), to the way we put others needs before our own. These things can make us seem less "powerful" or capable, especially when compared to a male coworker.
I wouldn't have thought Frankel's message was particularly novel or important except that now that I have a real job, I notice these things constantly. Men are socialized to be more vocal, more powerful, while women are socialized to be more nurturing. To this statement I say ("well, duh") but I never realized how much of this is visible through the way we act in the workplace. As a psychologist and business coach, Frankel gives very good suggestions to overcome these things.

Great book, highly recommended! While some things should probably be taken with a grain of salt, everything was useful to consider nonetheless. I really liked the fact that you start this book by taking a quiz, so that you know what personal weaknesses to focus on. Very readable format with practical tips.
Definitely dated - and for a book published in 2010 there were definitely some sexist comments which surprised me because the author is a woman. Some advice was good — but I found myself rushing through the old fashioned and out dated advice — especially the one that said a woman did not get a promotion because she doesn’t wear makeup. It does not feel like this book was lifting women up.
This message of this book is great! I think there are a few outdated tips, but the point is clear. Don't sabotage your career with correctable mistakes. The self-assessment test tailors the book to everyone's individual needs and offers provable, practical ways of changing behavior. I'd recommend this book to any young women starting her career.
Wow, who knew that all of us girls have daddy issues, and we take them out on our male bosses. Bleggghhh.
Hoewel ik er zeker leerzame punten uit heb opgestoken vind ik het boek teveel gericht op het zakenleven. Ik was daar van te voren niet bewust van.
En conclusie is ook gewoon, ik wil het hoek kantoor niet.

Man, I wish I had read this back when I actually put it on my "to-read" list, which was several years ago when I was still working in a corporate job. A lot of the stuff in this book is under the category of "No duh," but there's some gems in there, and I definitely came across things I was (and probably still am) guilty of. It's a super quick read and I think that any woman (or man, even) who isn't happy with how their career is progressing can find something useful in here.
Fantastic advice. Read my review at The Book Wheel.
