What a drag of a book. The main character Kayu has zero development and is a broken record of whining and complaining. With an ambiguous ending, and very little characters that have any sort of redeeming factors I found this book to be very difficult to get through. The chapters with the Mother Bear are the strongest part, but they are not long enough, the book would’ve been much more interesting had it been 160 pages less, and more about the Bear.

what the fuck!!! This book is a wild ride. Pretty gory, but definitely has some really interesting philosophy/worldview/cultural differences embedded in the book. I put this on my list because one of the Seattle Public Library's book bingo topics is "features an elder protagonist" - and I actually don't think I've read very many books that specifically focus on an older protagonist. I don't want to give more away. I think I enjoyed this read and I think I recommend it?? But damn. Intense.

This was the most gruesome book about fifty old women I’ve ever read.

Surprisingly good! Lots of interesting themes and a good ol' gore-y action.
