A deeply unsettling read - de Beauvoir is very talented at depicting the things people really think. lost all hope in matrimony.

"Rages, nightmares, horror - words cannot encompass them. I set things down on paper when I recover strength, either in despair or in hope. But the feeling of total bewilderment, of stunned stupidity, of falling apart - these pages do not contain them."

i sat outside in the freezing cold for god knows how long because i was so interested by the last story in this book. it felt so real and vivid, as if i was watching it play out right in front of me.

i love a good book about terrible women.
each story was excellent, i was very fond of the first one but torn apart by the third. the narrator is so well written and immersive it made me want to hate my boyfriend too. i wish i knew more about french/the translation since i could tell there was a bit of nuance in the language that was lost on me. but simone is certainly a new favorite author of mine, this is my first time reading her fiction. it was also fun to read this in paris, reading about a lunch date in parc montsouris while lounging in a post-picnic-cheese-comatose in parc montsouris :)
