The first book that I read about the Japanese occupation of Korea. The daily life of people living under occupation, their language culture, identity, and even their names taken away from them. How many such stories and histories are out there of different countries and people. I have read about Korea's history in school, but it was so brief, and it didn't provide me with much detail. I stumbled upon this book after reading Human Acts by Han Kang (one of my favorite books). I just researched some books, and I found this. A very well written book with sad and beautiful words.

Park has a wonderful way of portraying tragedy and loss through simple words. She nails the social complexities and nuances of Korean communication. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a historical fiction read.

A simple story of the Japanese occupation of Korea during WW2, as told by a Korean child and her teen-age brother. Fine for middle grade readers.
