The Summers Between Us is an incredible story that takes place over the course of 5 years in the past and 1 summer in the present. Throughout the story, Lia Juma, the protagonist, deals with crushing familial/cultural expectations and the fear of failing/letting everyone down. Her past is filled with secrets and misunderstandings, along with broken hearts and friendships. It was a typical and predictable Hallmark love story, with a few deeper undertones and unique elements.

Personally, I have not read a lot of romance stories in the past, because I’m very specific about what I do and don’t like, but this book cover caught my eye, and I decided to try it out. While I found the story really predictable, I loved following Lia’s love story and unraveling the mysteries of her past while seeing her slowly step into who she truly wants to be and love who she truly wants to love. Overall, I found this to be an endearing story.

Honestly… this one kind of made me mad??

Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, but I wasn’t a fan of that trope in this book. I was never convinced that the main characters loved each other, especially in the present timeline. The reason for the miscommunication between them was so icky to me. Not a fan—there are much better friends to lovers and second chance romance books out there.
