Super enjoyable! I liked that we still got the usual quirkiness we've come to expect in Ali's books, but this one kept it all in check and didn't result in annoying characters. I liked the chess elements, even though I didn't understand them, and it was neat to see her dabble in the world of YA.
Mallory was a relatable main character, and I appreciated the sacrifices she made to make sure her family was taken care of. I just wish they'd told her they appreciated her more. Her sisters were absolute TURDS to her, and it pissed me off royally to have to watch her go through such emotional and verbal abuse from family members she was trying to care for. I also hated that she carried around SO much guilt for her past with her dad when she truly had nothing to do with it, but that's what happens when you don't openly communicate with the ones you love.
Nolan was absolutely adorable! I loved his innocence, his determination, his intelligence, and his admiration and respect of Mallory, even when she handed his butt to him at chess.
Their love story was precious, the slow burn was well worth it, all steam is off-page/fade to black, and it was just a really good time overall. If you've never tried one of Ali's books, I'd recommend starting with this one!
Mallory is bisexual in case that's something you'd like to know before getting into the story.

Just the slightest bit dissapointed really.
No build up, no chemistry, a whiny MC and a slightly creepy and pushy love interest.
