funny hopeful lighthearted

If Ali Hazelwood has no fans, then I am deceased. This book had me wanting to learn how to play chess. Rivals to lovers is an elite trope and this was a treat to read.

This book features my frequent frustration with YA novels: young characters doing dumb miscommunication due to youth. It also has my second YA pet peeve: there is one parent alive, but deeply out of touch with real life.

As a 50-year-old, I cannot get over the idea that the mom character was months behind on the mortgage and the 18-year-old was working her butt off to do back payments, current mortgage payments, as well as anything else her little sisters wanted. The mom cannot be any kind of parent to teens and be that clueless about the financial situation.

The chess stuff and the romance stuff was ok. I’m still stuck on the middle sister being awful to the FMC and daring to call her selfish. Ugh.

Cute story overall. However, I found the main character to be a bit obnoxious. She was one of the those characters you want to yell at through the book that they are self sabotaging, but it went on too long! Also, it felt like this romance novel was missing…the romance. There was some and what was there was great, but I wanted more!

Also, the way her 14 and 12 y/o sisters openly knew about and discussed the main character’s sex life felt weird and inappropriate to me…especially since this was a closed door romance…
