Lovely book. It’s very easy to read through the chapters, even from the beginning I was hooked. Even though you know what the book is about, the rough outline of world war 2, there were many moments where I gasped and was baffled at what was happening. The story is written very well, I loved the characters. Reading the book brought up a wide range of emotions, anger, sadness etc. It was truly a lovely book to read.

such a beautiful and well written book. it may not be historically accurate, but it definitely touches a soft spot in our hearts.

when you see the situation through each sister's eyes... you find yourself hoping and praying for a happy ending. you hope to see some joy among so many losses.

and you do, you get a heartbreaking celebration of life. a tribute to courage and bravery. because both of them saved so many, saved their families and friends. saved their history. they left a mark.

I can tell why this novel is one of Kristin Hannah’s most popular. It was refreshing to read about WWII and the holocaust from a woman’s perspective; there was a passage at the end that really touched me when the narrator was talking about the different ways men and women confront memories of tragedy and trauma. Kristin Hannah loves to explore oppositional, familial relationships as well as internal vs. external conflict. I was especially invested in Herr Beck’s character and have a million questions about his morals and motives! I admire that she demonstrates both sisters’ strengths in different ways. The ending had a very satisfying full circle moment.
